Victoria, B.C.

Have I mentioned we’re moving to Canada?

The combination of our daughter and her wife living in Vancouver, the politics of the US, and the heat and humidity of Florida have all combined to prod us to make some big changes, and we’re having a blast with them. We’ll keep our Orlando home (otherwise known as the entitled feline reserve) for the time being, since we have no idea what to do with the six cats vs. an 825-square-foot apartment.

Anyway, after we got settled in Vancouver we took a road trip with Dani to Victoria. Yes, Victoria is on Vancouver Island, but a road trip is possible because of the ferries!

Dani scheduled some great activities. One day was a Taste of Victoria walking food tour of the Old Town and Chinatown (where almost no Chinese live). The standout was the matcha tea place.

Blue Grouse Winery

Another day we spent doing the wineries between Victoria and Nanaimo. While they are currently growing some fairly unusual grapes, it’s clear that climate change and practice are going to lead to some impressive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this area.

We were a bit disappointed in the food scene. There isn’t much in the way of fine dining, although Q at the Fairmont Empress was pretty good, and the Little Jumbo speakeasy was an excellent experience.

Originally we were going to take the ferry from Nanaimo to Whistler for a few days, but Dani had an upset stomach, so we’ll do that another time.
